Packing Up


As if selling your home and buying a new one isn't enough, you also have to hire a mover to pack up your stuff. Hiring experienced movers is the easiest way to take care

of packing the things in your home, but it comes at a premium price.

Can you pack up your own house? Of course you can. With a few simple guidelines, you can do it yourself at a minimal financial investment. Yes, this does take labor on your part, but there are simple tricks that will make the project work more efficiently for you on both the packing and unpacking side.

To begin with, start the project approximately 2 weeks ahead of the day of your move. Many of us have a tendency to wait until the last minute thinking that we don't have that much to do, but we always have more than we think. Believe me, after moving 30 times in my lifetime, this has always been true.

  • Concentrate on one room at a time. Don't try to do the whole house at once.

  • Pack only items that you know you won't be needing over the weeks to come, such as: decorative items, pictures, china, clothes, books, toys, etc.

  • Separate out items, you no longer need, for donation or destruction.

  • Use packing boxes that are medium to small for easy handling and stacking. Use packing paper instead of newspaper so that you won't have to clean the things you pack. Newspaper transfers ink. Bubble wrap and small towels and T-shirts are also good packing materials for breakables.

  • Mark the boxes clearly so that when you move you can put them in the proper rooms in your new home and easily identified for placement on shelves, dressers, closets, drawers, hutches, end tables....

It's as simple as that.
