MUDDY MESSES

The reason we have mudrooms is to avoid the mess created by changing weather or just bringing the outside in.

From working in the garden to playing in the rain, we all have to protect ourselves from the elements. So, when we take off those muddy shoes or hang up our wet umbrellas, we need a place to put them.

Designing or organizing a mudroom is a perfect way to manage those things we don't want to bring into our nice clean home. We can even use the space to store those small things we use to plant, work, or play outside.

Here are some ideas for creating an efficient mudroom:

  • Plan ahead. Make a list of the items you feel need to be easily accessible for working on a project, heading off to school, or just enjoying the outdoors. Consider planning places for gloves, gardening supplies, trash bags, and outdoor games as well as boots, raincoats, and backpacks.

  • Check to see that you have an area for a mudroom. Maybe in the garage or near your backdoor with enough space to put hooks and shelves. It doesn't have to cost a lot to carve out a little room.

  • Give everyone in your home a space of their own and mark each place with their names.

  • Include a message board for notes.

  • Place a bin and a small rug near the door to encourage recycling after an outdoor gathering and wiping off those muddy boots and sneakers.

  • Don't forget your pets. Give leashes and other pet supplies their own space.

There is nothing like having a place for everything even if they are damp and muddy.

It's as simple as that!
